ELL272 introduces concepts and practical tools for analysing spoken, written and visual communication. This subject will get you thinking about how experience can be represented in different ways, how identities and opinions are negotiated, how coherent conversations and texts are built up through language, and where tensions occur. The concepts and tools are useful for both quantitative and qualitative analysis, and students can use them for studying history, business, languages, International Studies, literature, media, education, health care, environmental humanities, and many other fields. This subject is based on English but occasional examples from other languages may be used. It is an elective in the English Language and Linguistics minor.
